The 12-credit AI Engineering Graduate Certificate prepares you to work as an AI or machine learning engineer or architect who designs, builds, and maintains intelligent systems. Learn to create AI-powered systems for a variety of industries using deep learning techniques in AI modeling.
This stackable certificate, embedded within the Master of Software Engineering, helps you master skills in areas such as:
- Agentic systems
- Analytics programming
- Machine learning and neural networks
- Natural language processing and generation, including sentiment analysis
Courses
- A-I 574 – Natural Language Processing (Prereq: STAT 500 and A-I 570)
- A-I/DAAN 570 – Deep Learning (Prereq: STAT 500)
- A-I 801– Foundation of Artificial Intelligence
- DAAN 862 – Analytics Programming in Python (Prereq: STAT 500)
You can earn this certificate in less than one year or complete it at your own pace. All courses must be completed with a minimum grade of C or better and an overall GPA of 3.0.

- The program requires an undergraduate degree in computer science or related fields.
- If your degree is in another discipline, you will be considered if you have extensive work experience in software engineering and/or taken courses related to programming/software development.
- Complete the prerequisite math and programming coursework:
- Calculus I (equivalent to Penn State's MATH 140)
- One semester of probability or statistics
- One semester of linear algebra
- Two introductory-level programming courses, both in the same language. If you believe your work experience satisfies the programming requirement, please include a recommendation letter from a technical colleague describing your coding contributions at work.
Prep Courses
If you have not met these math and programming prerequisite courses, we offer low-cost, non-credit online prep modules that provide a strong practical foundation. Based on your academic experience, program advisors will recommend the most suitable modules for you.
