Responsible and Ethical Conduct of Research (RECR) Program for Engineering and Technology Students

In order to satisfy the Responsible and Ethical Conduct of Research (RECR) requirement for a Penn State master's degree, all graduate students in the artificial intelligence, data analytics, engineering management, information science, software engineering, and systems engineering programs are required to participate in five hours of discussion-based activities surrounding topics pertaining to the responsible conduct of research. Please note: RECR was formerly known as Scholarship and Research Integrity (SARI).

In the Penn State Great Valley Engineering and Technology RECR Module, topics pertaining to plagiarism, conflict of interest, research misconduct, and collaboration will be discussed via three case study-based forums. The discussions will take place asynchronously over a two-week period and the module is offered four times per year. Successful completion of the requirements in a single module will satisfy the RECR requirement for a Penn State degree.

How to Enroll in the Required RECR Course

RECR is available in the fall and spring semesters only; it is not offered during the summer semester. We do not accept or hold advance requests to enroll in RECR. Students must be actively enrolled in their first semester or later to be eligible to enroll in RECR. Students must complete the RECR requirement in order to be eligible to graduate.

When the enrollment window is open for one of the modules listed below, students who wish to enroll must complete the RECR enrollment form. Students who complete the enrollment form will receive an enrollment confirmation email once they have been registered.
