Smart Systems Research Group

The Smart Systems Research Group at Penn State Great Valley consists of a team of faculty and student researchers who perform methodological and applied research in three main areas: machine learning/analytics and service science, simulation and optimization, and trustworthy AI service systems. For questions or more information, contact us at [email protected], [email protected], or [email protected].

In the machine learning/analytics and service science area, people-centric services and systems are explored by leveraging the advances in sensing technologies, machine learning, and data analytics. Healthcare and smart cities are two major applications this group is interested in.

The simulation and optimization area involves the use of stochastic simulation, statistical data analysis, and optimization approaches to contribute to the science of decision-making in a wide range of areas, including but not limited to queueing systems, supply chains, sharing economy, energy, and infectious disease modeling. This area also includes research on novel learning environments enabled by immersive simulations in STEM education.

By leveraging research activities built around service computing and smart services for the Internet of Things (IoT), developing new chains of data analytical models and tools and platforms for designing and deploying trustworthy AI service systems is another focus area. A multidisciplinary and systematic approach—integrating AI, IoT, and blockchains—is applied to exploring a variety of trustworthy AI service systems.
