The Insights Lab at Penn State Great Valley provides a dynamic space for applied learning, where students and faculty can synergize their expertise and creativity using analytics and artificial intelligence to tackle pressing industry problems by translating data into insights.
Our vision is to foster collaboration and expose students to diverse perspectives, cultivating a community of problem-solvers equipped to navigate the complexities of modern industries, leaving a lasting imprint on the world through their innovative contributions. Through hands-on experience and mentorship, we empower our students to work collectively with faculty and corporate partners, bridging the gap between academia and industry, to enrich their educational journey beyond the classroom.
The Insights Lab offers business and industry an infrastructure, trained faculty, and graduate students to analyze large datasets, identify trends, and develop predictive models to solve complex real-world problems.
Research
Our research focuses on AI and analytics for cybersecurity, health care, manufacturing, and social good. Past projects have included:
- AI and cybersecurity: A multidisciplinary approach to design and deploy smart and secure service systems enabled by AI and blockchains
- AI and service science: Leveraging data and analytics for multiple disease risk prediction modeling after hospitalization, early Alzheimer’s disease detection, enhanced strategies for electric vehicle sharing, evaluating higher education ranking systems, and assessing service quality through public opinion aggregation
- Designing smart cities: Leveraging systems and technologies to improve city infrastructure and governance to address social, economic, and environmental challenges
- Prioritizing public health resource allocation: Optimizing COVID-19 epidemic control strategies in public transportation and metropolitan areas via network and simulation analysis
- Health misinformation: A data-driven approach to identify online misinformation regarding COVID-19
- Analyzing political sentiments: Insights from emotion classification of Twitter data for predicting 2020 presidential election results
Our students have a multitude of opportunities to share their work. We host an annual student poster competition, where students explain their research to a panel of faculty judges.
