Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence

Advance your career in one of the fastest-growing technology fields with the new Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence at Penn State Great Valley. This 30-credit graduate program prepares students with the advanced technical expertise, research experience, and practical skills needed to lead in today’s AI-driven economy.

The M.S. in Artificial Intelligence combines rigorous theoretical foundations with hands-on, applied learning. Designed for aspiring AI researchers and technologists, data scientists, and engineers, this STEM-designated program covers in-demand topics such as machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing (NLP), computer vision, and reinforcement learning.

Through a curriculum grounded in both innovation and application, students learn to design intelligent systems, analyze complex datasets, and deploy AI solutions across industries.

M.S. in AI Program Details

  • Hybrid classes combine flexibility with in-person instruction and access to state-of-the-art research labs, while also meeting requirements for international students studying on an F-1 or J-1 visa. Courses run for seven weeks, often alternating between in-person and online sessions.
  • Complete your degree in two years of full-time study or two and a half years of part-time study.
  • Take advantage of Career Services, which offers resources and networking opportunities to support you throughout your career.
  • Join a powerful network of more than 800,000 Penn State alumni globally.

Research-Focused Experience in the M.S. in AI Program

In contrast with the Master of AI, which is oriented toward professional practice, this research-oriented M.S. program emphasizes theoretical foundations, mathematical modeling, algorithm development, and empirical research.

The program involves opportunities for close collaborations with regional industries and a culminating thesis that you will complete over two semesters. This independent research project allows you to choose and explore a specialized AI topic, apply advanced research methodologies, engage in scholarly analysis, and contribute original insights to the field.

You will receive high-quality instruction and mentorship from research-active faculty as you gain demonstrated expertise in scholarly research, analytical reasoning, and drawing conclusions. You will present your findings to faculty and peers, allowing you to practice your communication skills with the academic community.

M.S. in AI Career Opportunities

This rigorous program prepares graduates for advanced careers in industrial R&D, academic research, and doctoral study. Graduates of this AI master’s program are prepared for high-demand roles that contribute to the scientific and technological frontiers of the field, including:

  • Artificial intelligence engineer

  • Machine learning engineer
