Academic Advising and Mentoring for Working Professionals

Our faculty advisors understand the unique challenges many of our students face as working professionals and are committed to providing personalized guidance that respects their time constraints while maximizing their educational experience. Our proactive advising model emphasizes:

Academic Advising Services

Our academic advisors serve as your primary point of contact and guide throughout your graduate journey at Penn State Great Valley. They can recommend customized strategies for success based on your individual circumstances and goals. You can expect your faculty advisor to:

  • Provide comprehensive program information and planning support
  • Conduct advising sessions via multiple channels (in-person, virtual, phone, or email)
  • Offer guidance on course selection, transfers, waivers, and focus pathways
  • Monitor your progress toward program completion
  • Address questions regarding procedures, policies, and technical access
  • Connect you with appropriate university resources, including health and counseling services

Professional Mentoring 

Faculty advisors not only help students navigate their academic programs, they also mentor students and support their holistic development as professionals. As mentors, academic advisors: 

  • Provide support and encouragement during challenging academic periods
  • Share information about research, grant, internship, and employment opportunities
  • Help you apply academic knowledge to the workplace
  • Provide guidance on leveraging your degree for career progression
  • Support the development of leadership skills relevant to your industry

  • Inform advisors of significant changes in your academic or professional circumstances
  • Communicate proactively about scheduling constraints and challenges
  • Prepare for advising sessions with specific questions and goals
  • Provide feedback on the effectiveness of advising and mentoring support

Connecting With Your Advisor 

Faculty advisors are assigned at the time of your admission. Please refer to LionPATH for the name of your advisor. Contact your advisor to schedule an appointment. If you are unable to locate your advisor's information, your advisor is on sabbatical leave, or you cannot reach your advisor, please contact your academic unit:
