To all students currently enrolled in a graduate degree program, the Writing Center offers free email consultations with the writing coach.
Email consultations can be as effective as in-person sessions and is ideal for students who have difficulty getting to campus during normal Writing Center hours (Tuesday - Thursday from 3:00 - 8:00 p.m.).
Whether in-person or by email, the goal of the Writing Center is to help you, the student, become an independent writer and effective self-editor. To that end, we have established the following policies:
- Students are limited to 1 consultation per week, 2 per assignment (e.g., a planning session and a review session), and no more than 4 consultations in a 7-week term.
- The writing coach will not proofread your paper and consulting with her does not guarantee a "perfect" paper or a particular grade. Students are responsible for their own work.
- Students should allow a turnaround time of at least two business days.
What to Expect
During an email consultation, the writing coach will spend approximately one-hour reading and reviewing your draft. Depending on the level of writing, she can typically respond to up to 8 double-spaced pages of text in one session. Her review will focus on surface-level issues of style and mechanics or content issues of argument development and organization. Both cannot be completed in one session. The writing coach will then email you with recommendations to revise your paper with the aim of helping you develop your research and composition skills overall.
Email Your Paper
To get started, email your paper as an editable MS Word document to GVWritingCenter@psu.edu. Please include the words "Email Tutoring" in the subject line and use the body of the email message to ask the tutor questions or indicate where she should focus her attention.
The tutor will then acknowledge receipt of your paper and indicate by when you can expect to receive her review.
