The Project Management Professional (PMP®) Exam Preparation course is designed to prepare students for the PMP Exam taken through the Project Management Institute (PMI®).

Penn State University is a Project Management Institute (PMI) Registered Education Provider (R.E.P.), and is committed to enhancing the ongoing professional development of PMI Members, PMI-certified Project Management Professionals, and other project management stakeholders.

This 21-hour course will focus on not only the tools and techniques used to better prepare for the PMP exam, but also the instruction surrounding the different types of methods and strategies on how to take the actual exam. The course will provide the necessary guidance throughout the entire process from applying for the exam, as well as what is required to keep the certification upon successful completion.

Penn State Great Valley's program offers only the highest caliber of instructors, who not only teach within the Project Management Certificate Program, but who come into the program having years of real-world experience. This expertise provides students with the knowledge and skills needed for success.

Innovative Technology Action Group (ITAG)

This course is approved by the Innovative Technology Action Group (ITAG). Partial scholarships are available from ITAG through a training grant from the PA Department of Labor and Industry.

Course Scope and Sequence

This 21-hour course consist of: face-to-face lecture, classroom discussion, as well as simulated sample test question sessions. Students who have completed the PMP Exam Preparation course will be awarded 21 Professional Development Units (PDUs) which can be put towards the 35 hours needed to sit for the PMP Exam.


Students looking to enroll in the PMP Exam Preparation course must familiarize themselves with both the PMI's Project Management Book of Knowledge (PMBOK), as well as Rita Mulcahy's PMP Prep Textbook (8th edition).

Who Should Attend

This course is open to anyone preparing for and eligible to sit for the PMP Exam administered through Project Management Institute. 

Course Objectives

Throughout this 7-week preparation course, students will be able to review project management practices such as project initiation, planning and scheduling, project cost management, and project risk management that are in line with the methodologies also taught by the Project Management Institute.   

Continuing Education Units

Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are awarded based on a standard of one unit per ten (10) hours of classroom contact.
